Volunteer Missing is You

Are you ready to get involved with Okemos Public Montessori PTO this year? You don’t need to make a big commitment, and you don’t have to come to monthly meetings to make a difference (although ALL are welcome)! Whether you are a First Time time OPM Central Parent or a Seasoned “Pro”, if you have a little or a lot of time to donate, all help is appreciated. Many tasks can even be done at home, online, or outside of school, and positions are open to any parent. Please visit the Volunteer Sign-Up Page to express what you are interested in. Below is additional information on some of the events and volunteer spots that might help you decide what you could volunteer for. More details for each volunteer opportunity will be shared with those that are interested.

Classroom Parent: Ongoing
Act as a liaison between the PTO and your child’s classroom teachers/parents. You would need to attend PTO meetings to have all the information needed to get the teachers and other parents informed and excited about our upcoming events. We need at least one parent from each classroom. If you cannot attend every PTO meeting, recruit another parent in your classroom to share this responsibility with you. Here is our list of upcoming PTO meetings.

Communication Team: Ongoing
Chairperson: Jillian Winn
Help manage and create content for the OPM PTO website, emails, Facebook page, and other social media. If you use social media regularly and/or are a good communicator and would like to help share our events happening at school, this is for you! We could use your help with our communications and social media presence. Tasks could include content writing, answering user questions, strategizing and implementation.

Grant Research and Writing: Ongoing
We need people who can work with our PTO board to research and/or apply for grants for our school. Grants allow us to help out with projects that might not normally be in the budget.

Landscaping: Ongoing
If you have a green thumb, or would just like to help beautify our school’s outdoor setting, we could use help with: Fall and Spring clean-up of front landscaping; water new plantings; help with planting a potential Herb Garden; and other potential outdoor beautification projects.

Procurement Committee: Ongoing
Chairperson: Niki Robinson
Purchase items on behalf of the PTO and submit for prompt reimbursement.

Yearbook Committee: Ongoing
Co-Chairpersons: Heather Moeser and Stephanie Winslow
We’re looking for classroom photographers, event photographers, photo organizers, help identifying students in photos, writing captions, and general yearbook tasks.

Auditor: Ongoing
Chairperson: Nancy Hardwick
Review the books to ensure that the bank statements and the electronic QuickBooks File mirror one another. Ensure that each transaction has proper documentation and is filed appropriately with a back-up on the google drive.

Box Tops: Ongoing 
Chairperson: Cathy Blatnik
Collect, organize, and submit Box Tops.

District Parent Council: Monthly
Co-Chairpersons: Katie Cavanaugh and Kyle Volz
Represent OPM at the monthly district parent council meeting and report back to the OPM PTO.

Meet the Masters presenter: Monthly
Chairperson: Dave Rogers
Meet the Masters art appreciation program is a fun and fascinating way to volunteer in your child’s room. Once a month you meet with the class to discuss a painting by a famous artist. Sessions run about 20-30 minutes. Plenty of background material is available on the art and artists, and the children are full of questions and observations. You’ll learn a lot and love it! (2 people may share duties and alternate months). We need presenters for each classroom.

Spirit Wear: Fall
Chairperson: Jennifer Berman
Assist in the design, ordering, delivery, and sales of OPM spirit wear.

Fall Book Fair: November 4th, 5th, and 7th 2019 
During conferences , help Mrs. Sally with set-up and/or sales at a school book fair held in the library. One day or all three, whatever your schedule allows.

Fall Teacher Luncheon: November 5th, 2019
Chairperson: Anna Krystyniak
Work with the Chairperson in planning a luncheon for the teachers during conferences. You can help with choosing a theme, contacting other volunteers to donate food, and assist with set-up/clean-up.

Family Fun Bowling: November 16th, 2019, 9-11am
Co-Chairpersons: Andrea Palomba and Ann Crain (mentors: Jennifer Berman/Kimberly Scott)
Assist the chairperson for planning the event; help with various activities on the day; set-up; clean-up; or ticket sales. Lots of roles to choose from.

Grandparent’s Tea: February 14th, 2020
Chairperson: Katie Cavanaugh
This is an annual event where children invite their Grandparents to “tea” – there will be some songs, and they get to have tea and cookies with their Grandparents. You could assist with refreshments set-up/clean-up, etc. Event is held during the school day.

Spring Book Fair: March 9th, 10th, and 12th, 2020
During conferences, help Mrs. Sally with set-up and/or sales at a school book fair held in the library. One day or all three, whatever your schedule allows.

Mileage Club: Spring 2020
Chairperson: Evie Leiby
Mileage Club is a program designed to make exercise fun by offering OPM students the chance to walk/run during designated break periods at school and earn incentives for reaching key milestones. We need volunteers to help log participants’ times/miles. We also need Chairperson to lead the group of volunteers in the planning and coordination of each day.  Most volunteer time is during school recesses. Smaller children are welcome to accompany volunteers.

Teacher Appreciation Week: May 4th-8th, 2020
Chairperson: Anna Krystyniak
Assist in a variety of roles to show appreciation to our teachers and commemorate Teacher Appreciation Day.

Upper Elementary Coordinator: June 2020
Chairperson: Kyle Volz
Coordinate the upper elementary end of year party (draft sign-up provided), print graduation certificates (template provided) and wrap up the graduation pens for the year-end assembly.

Field Day: June 8th, 2020
Chairperson: Erich Bandemehr  
Volunteers will assist Phys Ed teacher Daniele with set-up; clean-up; water balloons; refreshments; and game monitoring/coaching on the morning in the back field/playground area.

Community Event Coordinator: Ongoing
Co-Chairpersons: Cherlyn Tay and Jennifer Berman
Line-up all of our Eat Outs and any special events during early release days. The PTO organizes “Eat Out” and early release events to help foster our school community by providing an opportunity for people to get together. A great side-benefit of these events is that some of the venues (but not all) share profits from the event with our school as a way for them to support and give back to the community.

Flash Dash Fun Run: TBA
Co-Chairpersons: Dana Choi and Jillian Winn
This is our big fundraiser of the year! Volunteer opportunities include: Assist with event planning; corporate donation solicitation; snack planning; student envelope stuffing; event set-up; check-in/check-out; or clean-up. We need a group of dedicated parents to help organize this event.

Not sure yet if you can commit to a specific activity or event? Do you have other general skills like baking, photography, computer/web skills, carpentry, public speaking, design, artistic, writing, requesting donations, fundraising ideas, etc? Please let us know what your strengths are and we’ll work with you on how you can help.
