General PTO Volunteering Information

Are you ready to get involved with Okemos Public Montessori PTO this year? You don’t need to make a big commitment, and you don’t have to come to monthly meetings to make a difference (although ALL are welcome)! Whether you are a First Time time OPM Central Parent or a Seasoned “Pro”, if you have a little or a lot of time to donate, all help is appreciated. Many tasks can even be done at home, online, or outside of school, and positions are open to any parent. Below is additional information on some of the events and volunteer spots that might help you decide what you could volunteer for. More details for each volunteer opportunity will be shared with those that are interested.

We need help giving thanks to our teachers!

PTO is looking for families to sponsor every other week to donate and drop off a small treat (piece of small candy would be fine) and a thank you card personally addressed for all of their hard work at Okemos Public Montessori. By signing up you are agreeing to purchase or make enough cards for all staff and a small thank you token such as a piece of candy. Willing to help? Sign up for date.

School Community Events

Social Events Include:

  • Popsicles on the Playground (August)
  • Fall Fest and Truck or Treat (October)
    Help coordinate the planning of the event and help volunteer the day of the Fall Truck or Treat event.
  • Sweatheart Tea (February)
    This is an annual event where children invite their Grandparents or other special person to “tea” – there will be some songs, and they get to have tea and cookies. You could assist with refreshments set-up/clean-up, etc. Event is held during the school day.
  • Spring Chalk Art (April)
  • Eat Outs (Ongoing)
    Line-up all of our Eat Outs and any special events during early release days. The PTO organizes “Eat Out” and early release events to help foster our school community by providing an opportunity for people to get together. A great side-benefit of these events is that some of the venues (but not all) share profits from the event with our school as a way for them to support and give back to the community.

Special School Events and Support

Special School Events Include:

  • Meet the Masters
    Meet the Masters art appreciation program is a fun and fascinating way to volunteer in your child’s room. Once a month you meet with the class to discuss a painting by a famous artist. Sessions run about 20-30 minutes. Plenty of background material is available on the art and artists, and the children are full of questions and observations. You’ll learn a lot and love it! (2 people may share duties and alternate months). We need presenters for each classroom.
  • Mileage Club (Spring)
    Mileage Club is a program designed to make exercise fun by offering OPM students the chance to walk/run during designated break periods at school and earn incentives for reaching key milestones. We need volunteers to help log participants’ times/miles. We also need Chairperson to lead the group of volunteers in the planning and coordination of each day.  Most volunteer time is during school recesses. Smaller children are welcome to accompany volunteers.
  • Upper Elementary Coordinator / 4th Grade Graduation (June)
    Coordinate the upper elementary end of year party (draft sign-up provided), print graduation certificates (template provided) and wrap up the graduation pens for the year-end assembly.
  • Class Parent
    Act as a liaison between the PTO and your child’s classroom teachers/parents. Help the teacher with any classroom needs they have.
  • Yearbook
    We’re looking for classroom photographers, event photographers, photo organizers, help identifying students in photos, writing captions, and general yearbook tasks.

Teacher Appreciation

Teacher Appreciation Events Include:

  • Thankful for Teachers (November – Thanksgiving Week)
    Help organize our Thankful for Teachers efforts. We plan on getting a pie donated for each teacher that they can share with their family over Thanksgiving and give notes of thanks.
  • Spring Teacher Appreciation Luncheon and Week
    Assist in a variety of roles to show appreciation to our teachers and commemorate Teacher Appreciation Week.


Fundraising Related Events Include:

  • Spirit Wear Sale (September)
    Assist in the design, ordering, delivery, and sales of OPM spirit wear.
  • Holiday Fundraiser (November / December)
  • Valentine’s Fundraiser (February)
  • Field Day and Flash Dash (May / June)
    Volunteers will assist Phys Ed teacher Daniele with set-up; clean-up; water balloons; refreshments; and game monitoring/coaching on the morning in the back field/playground area. This is our big fundraiser of the year! Volunteer opportunities include: Assist with event planning; corporate donation solicitation; snack planning; student envelope stuffing; event set-up; check-in/check-out; or clean-up. We need a group of dedicated parents to help organize this event.

Non-Event Related Support

  • Landscaping
    If you have a green thumb, or would just like to help beautify our school’s outdoor setting, we could use help with: Fall and Spring clean-up of front landscaping; water new plantings; help with planting a potential Herb Garden; and other potential outdoor beautification projects.
  • WordPress Website Help
  • Grant Research
    We need people who can work with our PTO board to research and/or apply for grants for our school. Grants allow us to help out with projects that might not normally be in the budget.
  • CPA Auditor (once per year)
    Review the books to ensure that the bank statements and the electronic QuickBooks File mirror one another. Ensure that each transaction has proper documentation and is filed appropriately with a back-up on the google drive.
  • Communication Team
    Help manage and create content for the OPM PTO website, emails, Facebook page, and other social media. If you use social media regularly and/or are a good communicator and would like to help share our events happening at school, this is for you! We could use your help with our communications and social media presence. Tasks could include content writing, answering user questions, strategizing and implementation.
  • Class Supply Coordinator
    Help coordinate distribution of school supplies.
  • District Parent Council
    Represent OPM at the monthly district parent council meeting and report back to the OPM PTO.
