Are you ready to get involved with Okemos Public Montessori PTO this year? You don’t need to make a big commitment, and you don’t have to come to monthly meetings to make a difference (although ALL are welcome)! Whether you are a First Time time OPM Central Parent or a Seasoned “Pro”, if you have a little or a lot of time to donate, all help is appreciated. Many tasks can even be done at home, online or outside of school and positions are open to any parent. Please visit the Volunteer Sign-Up Page to express what you are interested in. Below is additional information on some of the events and volunteer spots that might help you decide what you could volunteer for. More details for each volunteer opportunity will be shared with those that are interested.
Act as a liaison between the PTO and your child’s classroom teachers/parents. You would need to attend PTO meetings to have all the information needed to get the teachers and other parents informed and excited about our upcoming events. We need at least one parent from each classroom. If you cannot attend every PTO meeting, recruit another parent in your classroom to share this responsibility with you. Here is our list of upcoming PTO meetings.
If you use Social Media like Facebook and Twitter regularly and would like to help share our events happening at school, this is for you! We could use your help with our Social Media presence. Tasks could involve conversing with Facebook or Twitter admins on potential content, content writing, sharing on your social media accounts, etc.
Grant Research and Writing:
We need people who can work with our VP of Fundraising and Treasurer to research and/or apply for grants for our school. Grants allows us to help out with projects that might not normally be in budget.
If you have a green thumb, or would just like to help beautify our school’s outdoor setting, we could use help with: Fall and Spring clean-up of front landscaping; water new plantings; help with planting a potential Herb Garden; and other potential outdoor beautification projects.

We’re looking for classroom photographers, event photographers, photo organizers, help identifying students in photos, writing captions, and general yearbook tasks.
Family Fun Bowling: November 17, 2018, 9am-11am
Chairperson – Kimberly Scott
Assist the chairperson for planning the event; help with various activities on the day; set-up; clean-up; or ticket sales. Lots of roles to choose from.
Chairperson – Tracey Pickard
Work with the Chairperson in planning a luncheon for the teachers during conferences. November 6, 2018, and March 12, 2018 are the two dates for this school year. You can help with choosing a theme, contacting other volunteers to donate food, and assist with set-up/clean-up.
Book Fair: Help Mrs. Sally with set-up and/or sales at the school book fairs held in the Central library. Book fairs are held during Conferences weeks November 5-9, 2018, and March 11-15, 2019. Volunteer for one Book Fair or both; One day or all five, whatever your schedule allows.
Grandparents’ Tea: February 14, 2019
Chairperson – Katie Cavanaugh
This is an annual event where children invite their Grandparents to “tea” – there will be some songs and they get to have tea and cookies with their Grandparents. You could assist with “flower” creation/assembly, refreshment set-up/clean-up, etc. Event is held during the school day.
Mileage Club: Spring 2019
Mileage Club is a program designed to make exercise fun by offering OPM students the chance to walk/run during designated break periods at school and earn incentives for reaching key milestones. We need volunteers to help log participants’ times/miles. We also need Chairperson to lead the group of volunteers in the planning and coordination of each day. Most volunteer time is during school recesses. Smaller children are welcome to accompany volunteers.
Flash Dash Fun Run: May 10, 2019
Chairpersons – Dana Choi and Jillian Winn
This is our big fundraiser of the year! Volunteer opportunities include: Assist with event planning; corporate donation solicitation; snack planning; student envelope stuffing; event set-up; check-in/check-out; or clean-up. We need a group of dedicated parents to help organize this event.
Teacher Appreciation Week: May 6-10, 2019
Chairperson – Anna Krystyniak
Assist in a variety of roles to show appreciation to our teachers and commemorate Teacher Appreciation Day.
Field Day: June 10, 2019
Chairperson – Erich Bandemehr
Volunteers will assist Phys Ed teacher Daniele with set-up; clean-up; water balloons; refreshments; and game monitoring/coaching on the morning in the back field/playground area.
Meet the Masters classroom presenter: Monthly
Chairperson – Dave Rogers
Meet the Masters art appreciation program is a fun and fascinating way to volunteer in your child’s room. Once a month you meet with the class to discuss a painting by a famous artist. Sessions run about 20-30 minutes. Plenty of background material is available on the art and artists, and the children are full of questions and observations. You’ll learn a lot and love it! (2 people may share duties and alternate months). We need presenters for each classroom.
Girls on the Run: Spring 2019
Need a volunteer to organize and coach in a NEW running and self esteem building program for girls.
Not sure yet if you can commit to a specific activity or event? Do you have other general skills like baking, photography, computer/web skills, carpentry, public speaking, design, artistic, writing, requesting donations, fundraising ideas, etc?
